Kirstie's Handmade Britain Update

Kirstie's Childrens Tea Party December 7th 2011
Judging by the amount of chocolate cake that was stuck to our cake stands when we got them back I would say a good time was had by all. Our large Royal Doulton Line three tier cake stand can be seen as the table centre piece and is decorated with some yummy looking cupcakes. Our three stackable glass cake comports have been used individually along the table runner. All our new and vintage 3 tier cake stands are versatile and can be assembled as one, two or three tiers. Kirstie's next Channel 4 Christmas Special programme will be on December 21st at 8pm. Look out for more of our cake stands.

Cake Stand Heaven on Masterchef 2012

We have been dancing around our workshops all week. Well after all we do love our work but that's not the reason for our little jigs. The reason is that we have our cake stands appearing on Masterchef 2012 and "It doesn't get better than that", to misquote  Greg Wallace. Sorry Greg we couldn't help ourselves.
Now that must be the ultimate accolade.

We will announce the date when we know it.

In the meantime take a look at our New Arrivals to see the latest gorgeous cake stands and vintage china. New items are added daily.

Our British China Heritage

A must see for any vintage china lover is the BBC Four ‘Ceramics: A Fragile History’. The first two of three episodes ‘The Story of Clay’ and ‘The Story of Wedgwood’ can be viewed on the BBC i-Player until the end of this month.
Ceramics A Fragile History: The Story of Clay

The third episode ‘The Art of the Potter’ can be seen at 9pm, October24th.

This fascinating series explains many of the mysteries of china manufacturing, who the innovators were and the sad decline of the Staffordshire Potteries.

There is also a programme presented by Lars Tharp called the ‘Treasures of Chinese Porcelain’ from the Handmade in Britain: a BBC and V&A Partnership which is a year-long season exploring the history of British decorative arts.

It is no wonder that beautiful English vintage china has become so popular considering that there are now so few manufacturers producing their products in the UK and that there is a limited supply of vintage china.

If you only have one or two pieces of vintage china it isn’t easy to incorporate them into your everyday dining service but if you were to collect a mismatch of china you could create a beautiful and unique china tea set for daily use.

It makes sense to me to re-cycle pre-loved china and to bring it back into the dining room. A tiered cake stand is a thing of beauty and very likely will be cared for and passed on to the next generation.

Today’s vintage is tomorrow’s antique.

Mismatched Vintage China Gift Sets

If you have viewed the latest arrivals at Cake Stand Heaven you may have noticed our new collection of gorgeous mismatched vintage china boxed gift sets. We have selected the prettiest floral china teacups, saucers and tea plates together with a sandwich plate to create a tea for one gift set. These gift sets also include a hand made artisan soap on a floral china saucer. These make very attractive soap dishes. We think that these lovely boxed sets will make perfect gifts for busy gardeners and will delight those of you who appreciate vintage china and like to take their lunch in style.

We will include a gift card with your message should you wish to send one and some sweet little touches such as a sprig of lavender, a mini bar of organic chocolate, a ribbon bow on the teacup handle, a mulberry paper rose and a sealed green tea teabag with lemon.

For the refined gentleman we have created a tasteful boxed gift set in muted tones of red and brown with a touch of gold. Why not take a nice cup of tea from a china teacup rather than a large earthenware mug?

The gift sets are placed in a custom made rustic box and filled with rose coloured shredded kraft paper, tied with string and finished with a Cake Stand Heaven tag. To ensure that they reach you safely this is posted in a double walled outer postal box ready to send directly to your recipient.

In these times of making every penny count it makes great sense to send a personal gift that will last for years. All of our pre-loved vintage china is in excellent condition. We pride ourselves on good customer service and attention to detail. Recycling beautiful china is eco-friendly, fashionable and great fun too.

Cake Stand of the Month ~ August

August is almost here and hopefully it will bring the gentle warmth of late summer sun. We in the North of England are still waiting. If you stepped outside today you could be forgiven for believing that winter had arrived early. Getting from one place to the next has been like running the 100 metre dash to save getting soaked. The rain has been lashing down and the blustery wind is bashing against the window. It's less than pleasant for mid July. We need cheering up. This pretty cake stand is brimming with summer joy.

August ~ Three-Tier Cake Stand of the Month

"Fairest of Months! ripe Summer's Queen
The hey-day of the year
With robes that gleam with sunny sheen,
Sweet August doth appear." ~ R. Cambe Millen

Caverswell China August Plate

The above Caverswell 'August' plate is the seventh in a series of twelve for each month. Designed by John Ball to reflect the unique beauty of the book " The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" by Edith Holden.

It is beautifully decorated with bright red poppies, so evokative of late summer and corn fields ready for harvest. There are soft lilac harebells, prickling thistles and large white daisies. Those lovely meadow flowers so associated with an English summer in the country. I've talked myself right into an imaginary moment! Lying in a meadow field beneath swaying grasses to the gentle sound of bees buzzing under warm blue skies -sighs!

Okay, deep breath. Back to reality. We've chosen complementary colours and seasonal flowers for the middle and top tiers. A Royal Albert bone china plate from the Botanical Teas Collection with blowsy purple Clematis flowers and delicate orange 'Black Eyed Susan'. The top tier is a vintage Royal Ascot tea plate decorated with traditional old garden red roses.

At least this cake stand cottage garden can bring a little taste of summer all year round.

Looking to Buy a Cheap Cake Stand?

If you're looking to buy a cheap cake stand then buyer beware! You just might get what you pay for. Cheap equates to shoddy fittings, scratched and chipped plates and clumsy holes made in the plates which have failed to find the centre!

We did a little test this week and purchased what appeared to be two charming but cheap 3 tier cake stands from a certain website and proceeded to assemble them. The plates were indeed pretty but oh dear! We weren't charmed by them. Laugh! We fell off our chairs and proceeded to roll around on the floor holding our ribs together until the mirth subsided. I'm sure that a customer with high expectations might have had a sense of humour failure in the same circumstances. Frankly, we were shocked.

The holes were not in the centre of the plates which made the cake stand look drunk and no we weren't tippling the sherry at this point.

We made a mark to show the centre and as can clearly be seen in the above picture the hole is certainly not central. This makes the plate sit at an angle when assembled.

The above picture shows china chiped away from the central hole. Not what you want to happen on expensive and pretty plates.

This picture shows a chipped central hole and a long skid line where the drill head has slipped across the surface of the plate.

Finally the centre fittings were made of rubber - okay so that's a big fib but I don't know of many materials that bend and wobble so much.

Still want to buy a 'cheap' cake stand?

Many amateur sellers do not show pictures of the plates disassembled and make the hole which the centre fitting sits through far too large so that the plates slip from the thread and sit at odd angles.

Looking to buy a Cake Stand made by the professionals?

The above picture shows one of our drilled vintage china plates.

At Cake Stand Heaven we only sell skillfully drilled vintage plates which meet our strict quality control. Each cake stand we create has to give us a sense of pride and satisfaction. We would not sell a cake stand that we would not love to own or accept for ourselves. We assemble each one and check for alignment before posting to our customers. We do not use cracked, chipped or crazed plates. We use the same U.K. supplier for our die cast metal centre fittings as the major manufacturers do.

Our quality metal centre fittings easily support this Royal Worcester teapot top.

Finding good quality pretty vintage china is getting harder. Demand is extremely high at the moment so prices are being pushed ever higher. We often purchase tea sets and then find that we can only use one or two items as the rest have chips, crazing or hairline cracks. Such pieces would never be passed on to our customers. Our china is still great value and our search for ever more beautiful pieces goes on.

You wouldn't expect anything less would you?

English Afternoon Tea Vintage Tea Sets and Cake Stands

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, Andy Murray is out of Wimbledon, boo hoo!
It's summertime in the northern hemisphere and we've got our shorts on. Some of us have at any rate. What better way to make the most of this glorious weather than by taking afternoon tea alfresco? I don't mean burned sausages on the barbecue thank you. Let's recreate the refined English afternoon tea and have proper sandwiches cut into triangles and without the crusts please. I don't care if crusts make your hair curl. I had a perm in 1986 and it didn't suit me. No, I want dainty cupcakes and strawberry teas. Having twelve jars of homemade strawberry jam to get through that's a lot of scones and clotted cream too. I'm thinking tea on the lawn sipped from a bone china teacup and a slice of Victoria sponge eaten from a tea plate with a dessert fork. Pleasant conversation whispered above the gentle rush of a hand pushed lawnmower and the crack of a cricket ball on willow. Ah nostalgia! Now we have the relentless drone of electric mowers and power washers deafening the ears on a Sunday afternoon. Never mind. Life moves on a pace but traditions thankfully endure. Even the great British tea room cake stand has evolved and I hope you'll enjoy some of our latest teacup topped and quirky cake stands brought bang up to date with the charm of vintage nostalgia for a Great British afternoon tea in the sunshine.

A colourful three tier cake stand created from vintage Crown Regent china.

'Chelsea Girl' A mixed English fine bone china cake stand in pretty pink floral patterns. Pink apple blossom by New Chelsea, soft pink roses and a delicate poppy pattern teacup and saucer top from Tuscan china.

'Stardust' A soft yellow and dazzling gold tiered vintage cake stand made from beautiful fine bone china Royal Worcester dated precisely 1955. The bowl base gives it a quirky twist and is prefect for serving sweeties and anything that might otherwise roll off the plate.

'Blossom' A pastel pink and green cake stand decorated with soft feminine floral motifs.

'Alice's Tea Party'. An exclusive Cake Stand Heaven teapot topped cake stand. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Tea Party hosted by the Hatter.

Of course you'll need some teacups and saucers and tea plates for those dainty sandwiches and slices of cake. Above is an eclectic English bone china tea set decorated with tasteful patterns in shades of blue, green and ochre yellow, with a hint of classic red and finished with gold.

We do like to have a little of the best of everything! Why stick to one pattern when you can have a collection of the prettiest? This pink themed tea set is made from beautiful vintage English bone china decorated with divine pink floral patterns. They just don't make them this pretty anymore.

A fashionable mismatched vintage china tea set. I say mismatched but if I say so myself it takes something of an artistic eye and some skill to achieve a pleasing result. I love truly eclectic tea sets. It's the joy again of having a little of everything. Wonderful colours and patterns and shapes, and of course you can keep adding to it at leisure until it fills your entire cupboard space and your Welsh dresser and your display cabinet...

'Vintage Florals' Another beautiful eclectic tea set. Six tea trios in gorgeous patterns sadly long since out of production. The beauty being however, that it can be added to with more lovely vintage tea trios if your guest list grows.

If you want a traditional matching tea set then what about this one from the 1940s? Made by Windsor china and in beautiful condition. I think this is a very tasteful and understated set of teacups and tea plates. Hand tinted and finished in a blue trim.

The 1950s and the grim days of rationing are well and truly in the past! This fabulous retro tea set is fine quality china and was made by Queen Anne. The pattern is called Glade owing no doubt to the subtle meadow grasses decoration on the side of the teacups and tea plate centres. The real wow factor however has to be that fabulous shade of sunshine yellow. This has surely got to cheer you up when you pour a cup of tea on a grey day!

The 1960s and here we have the famous Coalport Cabbage Leaf design. A tea set inspired by natural form and texture. There's something very special about the tactile feel of these teacups too. The exquisite quality of the china has an almost 'soap-like' feel to it. This design is one that will endure because it is so versatile and timeless.

Next time I might bring you something antique and take you right back to high tea with the Edwardians and Victorians. This means of course you are not allowed to throw a couple of teabags into the teapot and you absolutely must remove the rind from your cucumber to make the perfect turn of the century sandwiches.

I wonder what the Edwardians would have said about mismatching their best china?

Birthday Flowers

Have you ever received a bouquet of flowers for your birthday? I'd like to think so. I have my birthday this month. Wonder if someone will send me a nice surprise this year? A bunch of birthday flowers maybe?

Just as there are birthstones associated with each calender month, tradition has it that there are also particular birthday flowers too. June's modern birthstones are moonstone and pearl. Symbolic of friendship, loyalty and modesty. *blushes* How true. I'm delighted to learn that I am also a Lancaster Rose. This is a stunning geographical co-incidence. An English Rose indeed. Perfect!

Apart from the fact that I will be another year older and wiser very soon, there is a reason for this birthday talk. I have for your delight a collection of charming vintage china which is blossoming with floral loveliness. Each piece is decorated with a beautifully illustrative birthday flower. I really enjoyed making the two cake stands. It's such a joy to work with pieces that you can truly appreciate and I adore these. I have a favourite of course and I'm ever so slightly tempted not to let it go. You may guess which. These pieces are to keep and treasure. Whoever owned them previous certainly did so. Tuscan china is exceptional quality. I think these must have been loved and admired and kept for very best. Here is a selection...

A milk jug and sugar bowl both decorated with September's Aster, as are the square base plates used to create the cake stands.

This cake stand is topped with October's Cosmos.

June's Rose :)

July's Water Lily

September's Aster

February's Violet

April's Sweetpea

This three tier cake stand has a mixture of September's Aster, January's Carnation and October's Cosmos.

Of course you don't need to have a birthday to use and appreciate this beautiful china. These enduring pieces can be enjoyed all year round and vintage charm is forever fashionable. Fine English bone china made circa 1949 by Tuscan China. The company is R.H. & S.L. Plant Ltd. They were once based at the Tuscan Works in Longton in the famous Staffordshire Potteries. You can read a little more about them in our newsletter on the website and find more from the Birthday Flowers collection in the shop section.

Okay, now I wait for the florist to knock on my door. Red roses I hope!
